Leprechaun Dough: How to Make Two-Ingredient Cloud Dough Recipe

Gina

In this BLOG post I will teach you how to make cloud dough and how to store it for continued use.

Are you curious about play dough and you're not sure where to start? Cloud dough is for you!

It is soft, squishy and simple to make. It only requires TWO ingredients and can be switched up for any interests, holidays or seasons.

Kids love it because they can build with it, smoosh it or run their diggers through it. They can stomp their dinosaurs around with it, turn it into a snowman, shove loose parts into it or just poke their fingers into it!

It truly is easy to make and a DREAM to play with.

Cloud dough is light and fluffy and SO much fun!

Exploring sensory play is not only engaging for kids (and adults!) but it works on a ton of skills as they play. It strengthens motor skills, helps to enhance language and vocabulary and it can also be incredibly calming.

This is our St. Patrick's Day Version and we call it Leprechaun Dough!

What can you do with cloud dough? Anything...truly!

A few ideas:

  • Pair cloud dough with your favorite cookie cutters and cut them out.

  • Add dinosaurs, farm animals or diggers to explore with.

  • Smoosh beads or gems into the dough (excellent fine motor work)

  • Place plastic coins (or anything small!) halfway into the dough. Use tongs or your fingers to pull them out!

  • Use a wooden or plastic roller and roll the dough.

  • Incorporate academic concepts by adding in plastic or wooden letters, numbers and/or shapes.

You can't go wrong. I promise. It's engaging and fun and so very magical each and every time!

Check out these varieties we have shared!

Sensory play supports:

  • Language development & vocabulary

  • Cognitive growth

  • Fine motor skills (small muscle movements)

  • Gross motor skills (big movements)

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Communication

  • Exploration of textures

  • One's ability to make connections

  • The concept of cause & effect

Materials:

  • Cornstarch

  • Hair conditioner or lotion

  • Food coloring (optional)

  • Glitter (optional)

  • Mixing cup

  • Bowl

  • Spoon

  • Sensory tray or bowl

  • Any tools or trinkets you'd like

Step 1: Measure and pour (1) cup of conditioner or lotion into the bowl.

Step 2: If you are adding glitter or food coloring, mix it in now.

Step 3: Pour in (2) cups of cornstarch.

Step 4: Mix all of the ingredients until fully incorporated. After you mix your dough, it may still look a bit crumbly. Here's where your hands get a workout! Take the mixture out & knead it. The more you squish & squeeze & smoosh the dough, the softer it gets! As all of the ingredients blend together, the dough becomes silky soft, easy to mold & perfect for little hands.

Step 5: Place it on your sensory tray or bowl, add in your favorite tools and trinkets and PLAY!

Storage:

  • Store in an airtight container. Wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it soft.

  • If it starts to get dry, add a little more conditioner or lotion.

  • If it is too sticky, add a little more cornstarch.
